Die Organische shape wurde nicht zu einem kurzlebigen künstlerischen Phänomen, sie wurde von den verschiedensten Kunstrichtungen aufgegriffen, weiterentwickelt und findet ihre volle Entfaltung in den zwanziger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts, insbesondere in den Werken der Bildhauer Henry Moore und Hans Arp.
Die folgende Arbeit soll zeigen, dass auch in der Malerei des Surrealismus Formen auftauchen, die als organisch bezeichnet werden können.
Im zweiten Kapitel werde ich zunächst auf den Surrealismus eingehen. Im Vordergrund steht dabei zum einen die Entwicklung des Begriffs „Surrealismus“, von seinem ersten Auftauchen bis zu seiner endgültigen Definition durch Breton, und zum anderen ein geschichtlicher Abriss, der die Entwicklung der künstlerischen Bewegung von ihren theoretischen Prämissen bis hin zu ihrem scheinbaren Ende, dem Tode Bretons, verfolgt. Die Organische shape, ihre Entwicklung, Beschreibung und Definition bilden den Inhalt des dritten Kapitels. Auf dieser Grundlage soll im Folgenden analysiert werden, wie sich organische Formen in den Werken surrealistischer Künstler niederschlagen, wo sie ihren Ursprung haben und mit welchen möglichen Konnotationen sie in Verbindung stehen. Beispielhaft werden mehrere Werke der Künstler Joan Miró, Yves Tanguy, Salvador Dalí und Pablo Picasso untersucht.
