About Kaomoji and Text Emoticons

Kaomoji (literally "face characters" in Japanese) are emoticons constructed from Unicode text characters. Unlike Western emoticons that are read sideways like :-), kaomoji are read straight on and use a wider range of characters including Katakana, mathematical symbols, and characters from Kannada, Thai, and other scripts.

The tradition dates back to the 1980s on Japanese bulletin board systems. While emoji have largely replaced simple emoticons in casual messaging, kaomoji remain popular in online communities, gaming, creative writing, and anywhere a more expressive text-only face is desired. Their advantage over emoji is universal compatibility - they display identically across all platforms and devices since they use standard Unicode characters.
