ASCII Character Table

Published by the American Standards Association in 1963, the 7-bit ASCII standard maps 128 code points to characters used in English text and device control. Codes 0 through 31 handle signaling (line feeds, tabs, carriage returns), while codes 32 through 126 cover letters, digits, and punctuation. Code 127 is DEL, originally used to mark erased characters on paper tape. Every major encoding system built after 1963 preserves these same 128 mappings in their lower range, making ASCII the common foundation of modern text processing.

Control Characters

The first 32 codes (plus code 127) are non-printable control characters originally used for signaling hardware devices. Only a handful - Tab (9), Line Feed (10), Carriage Return (13), and Escape (27) - remain in common use.
