Definition of Acute
The acute accent (´) sits above a vowel to signal stress or distinguish otherwise identical words. In Spanish, "si" means "if" but "si" means "yes" - the accent does the work. French uses it primarily on "e" (e) to mark a closed vowel, while Hungarian distinguishes short and long vowels with it.
