What is ISO Latin-1?
ISO Latin-1 is the common name for ISO-8859-1, the first part of the ISO 8859 series. The name "Latin-1" indicates it covers the Latin alphabet plus extensions needed for Western European languages: French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, and Scandinavian languages.
Other ISO 8859 parts cover different regions: Latin-2 (ISO-8859-2) adds Central European characters (Polish, Czech, Hungarian), ISO-8859-5 covers Cyrillic, ISO-8859-7 covers Greek, and ISO-8859-11 covers Thai.
